High heat retention storage heaters under ECO4: a UK household guide (2026)

Guide by ApplyFreeBoiler.uk (Reliant Energy Solutions Ltd), a heating and insulation installer in Bury, Greater Manchester. We are not the government, Ofgem or an energy supplier.

Many flats and homes without mains gas are heated by electric storage heaters that charge overnight on an off-peak tariff. Older models often run out of heat by the evening. High heat retention storage heaters are one of the heating measures that can be installed under ECO4 in eligible homes. This guide explains what to check before a survey. It does not guarantee funding.

1. List the heaters you have now

Note the make and approximate age of each storage heater, which rooms they are in, and any panel heaters or portable heaters you also rely on. Photos of the heater labels help the surveyor.

2. Check your meter and tariff

Storage heaters are designed around an off-peak electricity tariff such as Economy 7. Look at your bill or meter to see whether you have a two-rate meter and when the cheaper hours are. Your supplier can confirm this.

3. Understand how modern heaters differ

High heat retention models are better insulated, so they hold stored heat for longer, and they have electronic controls with room temperature sensing and timers. Ask the installer to explain the controls at hand-over.

4. Look at insulation at the same time

Heating upgrades under ECO4 are usually designed alongside insulation. Look up your home on the official EPC register and note whether the loft, walls or floor have been insulated.

5. Think about wiring and positions

New heaters normally go where the old ones were, on suitable circuits. Mention any tripping fuses, old consumer units or rooms where you would prefer a different position.

6. Gather eligibility evidence

Have proof of address, photo ID and any benefit award letters ready. Tenants need written consent from the landlord, and leaseholders may need freeholder or managing agent consent.

7. Compare local delivery data

See ECO measures by council on ApplyFreeBoiler.uk, built from DESNZ Household Energy Efficiency statistics.

8. Check eligibility

Use the ApplyFreeBoiler.uk eligibility check to see whether a heating or insulation pathway may be available for your home in England, Scotland or Wales. ECO4 is due to close on 31 December 2026.
